There are teenagers and there are teenagers. My sons were avid readers, read LotR at eleven, not even teenagers, yet. So, don't judge from one kid you know that doesn't read.
These statements tend to go this way but yes, it doesn't mean every single kid. It does bring attention to the fact that things have dumbed down and there are serious plummeting attention spans due to the internet effect in both adults and teenagers alike.
The trouble is, there are a few kids who don't do anything and all of a sudden it's all kids. And in the end everyone believes that they are worse now. :(
